Use lotion on your skin all year round, every day, after you bathe or shower.
—Christine, Elmira, NY
I try to be proactive about keeping my skin moisturized. So before it actually gets cold in the winter and my skin starts getting dry, I begin applying lotion often.
—Leslie, New York, NY
Before I go outside during winter, I massage some hand lotion on my hands and then put on my gloves. I find my hands are not as dry during the winter with this method.
—Victoria, Sacramento, CA
I apply moisturizer as soon as I get out of a hot shower so my skin absorbs it.
—Laura, New York, NY
I suffered with dry skin every winter and certain times in the summer. I tried everything but was still so miserable. Until one day when I was conditioning my hair — I decided to try it on my skin. After each shower or bath, I would apply hair conditioner on myself. Then I would lightly dry myself off. I did this religiously every night. That was 4 yrs ago, and since I've started this, have never had dry skin again. Now I only need to do this once a week, but I do use moisturizer after every bath. It worked wonders for me and my daughter-in-law!!
—Corrine, Hancock, MN
For ultimate smooth hands and feet, slather on lotion, and then put on socks and gloves for one hour.
—Lynn, Westwood, NJ
Use a humidifier.
—Cindy, Port Washington, WI
Apply your lotion once as soon as you get out of the shower and dry off. Then reapply a few minutes later.
—Laurie, Westwood, NJ
I apply lotion and then put socks on my feet — nothing makes them smoother.
—Jules, Comptom, CA
I use lotion after every hand washing!
—Margot, New York, NY
Before putting your hands in water — washing dishes — lather them with a good moisturizer, and slip on rubber gloves. The warm or hot water opens pores and absorbs the lotion. Plus, the next time you put on the rubber gloves, they will still have some lotion in them.
—Yvonne, Park Ridge, NJ
I have eczema and dry skin. Both conditions were greatly improved when I use homemade soap and lye soap. Both can be purchased online.
—Carol, Owensville, IN
Just 3–5 drops of olive oil in your bath is inexpensive, effective and odorless. If you prefer, a few drops of your favorite cologne will make your bath luxurious without the harshness of chemicals. Adjust the oil amount as needed.
—Mireya, Bedford, TX
Dry skin has been a problem for me. Now when I get out of the shower I immediately apply a good moisturizing lotion or body cream while my body is still damp (not wet). The dampness of the skin helps to lock moisture in. This has helped tremendously.
—Clara, Sarasota, FL
Drink lots of water!
—Frances, Salt Lake City, UT
I switched from taking baths to taking showers. I'm in and out quicker, and I really have noticed a difference in my skin. It's not as dry.
—Carmen, Los Angeles, CA
Nothing irritates my eczema more than pantyhose, so I'll do whatever I can to avoid them. I'm fortunate since I live in the south so it doesn't get that cold. But when it does, I wear pants instead of a skirt and stockings.
—Glenda, Fairhope, AL
I load up on Omega 3 fish oil supplements. I take them year round, but in winter when it gets cooler, I double what I take.
—Heidi, Baltimore, MD
Soap is too drying, even on my body. I use a cream body wash, like the ones from Dove so my skin doesn't get dried out in the shower.
