The Hot List: March 2010
FILM – Alice In Wonderland //Tim Burton’s adaptation of the Lewis Carroll book has inspired several Alice-themed jewelry collections, store windows and clothing designs and looks set to be the “Where The Wild Things Are” of 2010. With Johnny Depp in the lead role as The Mad Hatter, they’re off to a good start.
EVENT – Fashion Week //New York and London are over, Milan is taking place as we speak and Paris is set to begin later this week. The buzz around Fashion Week is always exciting. This season, several designers revived themes and designs from their previous collection, Anna Wintour stirred up some controversy in Milan and celebrities were noticeably absent from the front rows. You can’t escape the buzz!
MAGAZINE – Glossy //It’s a bit of a cheat, since we’ve featured Glossy Magazine on The Hot List before, but we’re more than enamoured with this London-based online magazine. The most recent edition features interviews with Nick Knight and Rosie Huntington Whiteley, so how can they really be missed?
IDEA – Hokey Croquis Fashionflat Sketchpad //This sketchpad is a tool for aspiring fashion designers and it comes complete with preprinted, proportional female croquis outlines that will disappear when you photocopy or scan. If you’re just starting out, or you want to revamp your design skills, this might be the best find ever.
DESIGNER – Isabel Marant //One of my favorite designers, Isabel Marant, is due to open her first New York store in the next few months. In the meantime, you can get your Marant fix from , who have just started stocking the Parisian label. While plenty of it is sold out, you can still grab an oversized lapis ring or a pair of feather drop earrings for a reasonable price.
MUSIC – Karen Elson //Gorgeous model Karen Elson is set to release her debut album this summer, which was produced by her musician husband Jack White. You can get a taste for her style with the teaser track “The Ghost That Walks” on her website, as well as watching the accompanying video. It’s dreamy, folky and has a Mazzy Star feel to it.
JEWELRY – ManiaMania //Set to launch soon, ManiaMania is a new jewelry line from stylist Tamila Purvis and art director Melanie Kamsler, two very fashionable Australians. Consisting of strong molten metal neckpieces and leather-and-crystal cuffs, the line was inspired by the 1973 film The Holy Mountain. Set to launch this summer (Australian winter), you should definitely be prepared.
TV – The Red Carpet Issue //Sundance Channel once again proves why they are the leaders of fashion television, with The Red Carpet Issue, a four-part documentary about the relationship between Hollywood and high-end fashion. Just in time for this year’s Academy Awards, the documentary features interviews with red carpet veterans like Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs and Milla Jovovich.
BOOK – Troubleshooting //New York writer (and part-time blogger for Urban Outfitters) Molly Young has just published a book entitled Troubleshooting, full of photographs, humorous vignettes and musings. Think of this book as your private view into the philosophical diary of a stranger, complete with art and designs by Chrix Luxton that put the finishing touch on her thoughts.
ART – WAFA Collective //WAFA (We Are Fucking Awesome) is a global artist collective that supports emerging artists, with members literally all across the world. The idea? To collaborate and inspire one another. All the art on the website was designed/created by two or more artists working together. The perfect way to make the world a better place.
